A family affair in Leicester as brothers and father/son make the national finals

Midlands Regional Final

Sunday 24th February 2013

Carl Newton will be joined at the National finals by his brother, Kieran, as both players from the Round Oak in Brierley Hill made it through their groups on Sunday in Leicester. Carl won his group with a +6 legs difference whilst Kieran finished runner-up in his group with a +1 difference which meant he missed out on the quarter finals buy a single leg.

Shaun Wharton from Leicester Rileys ran out the clear winner of Kieran’s group, equalling Carl’s +6 legs difference: both players deservedly going all the way to the final.

Father and son, Gaz…and Gaz Wilson (both playing out of Leicester Rileys…confused?) both made it through their groups with the elder of the two losing out in the quarter finals to Carl Newton. Gaz junior made it one step further than his father, losing out in the semi-finals (also to Carl).

Two players who also made it to the national finals were brothers Adam and Andrew Smith from the Gamlingay Social Club in Sandy. Andrew doing a little better than his brother on this occasion, making it through to the semi-finals on the day, despite having a broken arm!

Andrew lost out to Leicester Rileys’ Shaun Wharton, who would book his place in the finals to face Carl. It was a fiercely contested final that Carl won in the deciding leg. Congratulations to all qualifiers on the day and especially to Carl Newton: a worthy regional final winner!

Chris ‘Hoggs’ the limelight for a while but Symes takes the title in London!

South Regional Final

Saturday 23rd February 2013

It always seemed destined to be a Symes/Hogg final at Rileys Victoria on Saturday as both players threw some cracking darts to top their respective groups. Chris ‘Hogging’ the early limelight with a +6 legs difference, one leg better than Matt’s +5.

Mike edged out The Exhibition’s (Cambridge) ‘Mr Angry’, Simon Cassidy in his group; alas Simon qualified for the quarter finals as a runner-up, hitting six 180s on the day.

Chris blew his group away with a +6 average with Matt Carlon also making the quarter finals with a reputable +2 legs difference.

Last season’s Q school qualifier Darren Cotterell won his group on the day and looked a threat throughout, losing in the semi-finals to the eventual winner, Symes. Hogg saw off Phil Johnson-Hale in the other semi to set up a mouth-watering final.

The final was fiercely contested with some high scores from both; alas there could only be one winner and it was The Carisbrooke Arms’ (Gosport, Portsmouth) Mike Symes who emerged as a worthy one. Congratulations, Mike!

We will see all eight quarter finalists in the National final later in the year.

Want to know how to play Darts? Talk to Frank!

North Regional Final

Rileys, Wigan

Sunday 17th February 2013

It was a similar story over in Wigan on Sunday as Frank Kirkwood breezed through the group stages of the Redtooth Darts Northern Regional Final with a +6 leg difference. The Three Horses thrower from Keighley epitomised what our competition is all about and says he has used this competition as inspiration to try to take his game to the next level, which seems to be working!

The Three Horses at Keighley is run by Denise, who told me how successful the competition is in her pub, drawing in 12-18 players week in week out and proving to be a great business-builder on a Friday night.

Frank played fellow “Three Horsean” Martin Copperweight in the quarter finals, which proved to be his toughest encounter as he scraped through 3-2. The other quarter finals were relatively one-sided with James Ashcroft and Chris Long both 3-0 victors and Carl Bolshaw seeing off Karl Robinson 3-1.

The one-sided theme continued into the semi-finals with Chris Long and Frank both winning 3-0; Frank recording an 11 dart leg to boot and setting up a mouth-watering final against Woodlands St Helens’ Chris Long. Frank took the final with relative ease, 4 legs to 1.

We will see Frank, Chris, Carl, James, Martin, Richard, Ben and Karl in the National final – congratulations, fellas!

Back-to-back titles for bouncing Burrows

Scotland Regional Final

Rileys, Edinburgh

Saturday 16th February 2013

Paul Burrows made it back-to-back titles at Rileys Edinburgh to kick-off a couple of weeks of Redtooth Darts regional finals on Saturday.

From the start of the afternoon, Burrows looked the part as he cruised through his qualifying group losing only one leg to Gary Watt, who he would eventually meet in the final.

The Paraffin Lamp’s Alex Tweedy was equally impressive in the group stages, finishing with a +2 leg difference and edging out his “pub-mate” Rab Dougal into third spot. Rileys Edinburgh’s Scott Parry joined Alex, in making progress through the group, which included an impressive victory over the group winner.

The semi-finals were fairly one-sided with Paul overcoming fellow Rileys-man, Scott 3-0 and Rileys’ Gary seeing off Livingston’s Tweedy 3-1 in the other semi-final.

The final was a tense affair with both players hitting some good scores. When Paul checked out the incorrect score to believe he had won with the scores at 3-3, the crowd gasped and would have been forgiven in thinking that Gary would check out the 60 required. Alas, the pressure got to Gary and he hit the treble 20. Paul composed himself and took out the double 5 required to take a second consecutive regional final title.

Congratulations, Paul – we will see you, Gary, Scott and Alex at the National final later in the year!

MOOve over professionals, Paul’s Aim-ing for the World Championships!

The Redtooth Darts qualifiers headed for Wigan on Thursday full of confidence after battling their way past thousands of hopefuls at pub level, regional qualifiers and finally at the Redtooth Darts National Final in Leeds.

Catford’s Paul Amos had already topped his pub league, won a difficult South East regional final at London Victoria Rileys; and, of course, he was also the comfortable 4-0 winner of our National Final on stage at the Alexandra Palace during the Ladbrokes World Darts Championships in December. Paul would have been forgiven for not playing well at Wigan; alas the real “moo moo” certainly turned up.

Qualifying School for the Professional Darts Circuit is a step up for any pub players, with over 300 of the best darts players from around the world competing this year for only 25 tour cards. That said, all of our players did themselves proud with some sterling performances over the four days. Leicester Rileys’ Jay Wilson (61st) and The Sir John Barleycorn’s (Hitchin) Lionel Sams (32nd) both finishing in the top 64; and many of our other qualifiers recorded some terrific results along the way. The two Scottish lads, Darren Beveridge and David Sharp, both recorded a number of wins, including a memorable 6-0 from Sharp on Saturday and a couple of 6-1’s from Beveridge over the course of the four days, making their trip down worthwhile and a cause for a beverage or two…

David Murphy also made his trip over from the emerald isle worthwhile, beating Clive Lewis 6-1 in the first round on Saturday and Andy Blackwell 6-3 in the first round on Thursday, only to narrowly lose out to South Africa’s Charl Pietersen in the second round, who went on to hit a 9 darter and qualify for Q school on the very same day.  A case of ‘what might have been’ for David… And, like his Murphys…he’s not bitter!

What might have been and what the future holds are very positive contemplations for our players as they look back at a terrific experience and bright futures in the sport. The four lads from Stoke all have age on their side: 21 year-old Jamie Landon the youngest of the four, having already qualified for the PDC World Youth Championships taking place in March. Scunthorpe’s (Rileys) Mark Wilson and Barrow upon Humber’s (Six Bells) Jamie Ellam both showed what dangerous players they can be.

Gary Rigby and Stuart Williams travelled over from Abu Dhabi to take their place at Q school (Gary qualifying in Leeds and Stuart the organiser of the original Team Taylor out in the UAE deciding to fund himself). Both players’ did not regret their decision to travel as they hit a plethora of 180s and played some memorable darts. Both Gary and Stuart embody the spirit of Redtooth Darts, powered by Protege Events, and it was a pleasure to spend time with them.

From a Redtooth Darts/Protégé Events’ perspective, Q School belonged to Amos as he MOOOved forcefully through the field over the four days, starting on Friday as he reached the last 8, winning no less than five matches on the day and recording a 10 dart leg in one of these. This 5 match feat was repeated on Sunday as another 5 scalps were taken by Paul as he reached the last 16. The performances on these two days were enough to see Paul 5th on the Q School Order of Merit and comfortably on to the PDC tour. On Friday and Sunday, in the matches he won, Paul recorded 60 successful legs of darts and conceded only 31 – an average result of 6-3 which is testament to the fantastic standard of darts he threw throughout the week.

Paul is aiming to MOOve up the PDC rankings and qualify for next year’s PDC World Championships, where he hopes to grace the Ally Pally stage for a second time and milk an-udder packed crowd! We are all behind you, Paul, as the steaks have suddenly become a lot higher!!! Best of luck, MOO MOO!!!

Amos rises to the top as the cream of the Redtooth crop!

Rice is ‘creamed’ by ‘Moo Moo’ as Amos wins with an emphatic 4-0  whitewash at the Ally Pally!

As we arrived at the Alexandra Palace just before 10am on Sunday morning, we entered the players’ lounge to find Paul ‘Moo Moo’Amos hard at it on the practice board next to Mark Walsh, who would later go on to end Justin Pipe’s dream on becoming the 2013 PDC World Darts Champion.

Amos’ practice darts matched those of the Watford thrower and the he certainly did not look out of place, taking everything in his stride.

The players entered the great stage at around 11am to do some pre-match interviews alongside Sky’s John Macdonald and the legendary referee, Russ Bray. Both players appeared calm and following on from his accurate practice, Amos threw his first three darts on the Alexandra Palace stage. Lo and behold, he hit a 180 and set the tone for what was going to be a magical day for the Catford thrower.

Amos’ intent to take his game to the next level was clearly evident and he embraced all that the day threw at him and as Russ Bray called his nickname to the crowd and Labrinth’s ‘Earthquake’ echoed around the palace, the intent in Paul’s eyes was there for all to see. He high-fived his entourage en route to the stage and the “MOOOOOS” resounded from Amos’ army of fans! A walk-on worthy of any of the PDC professionals!

The Rattler’s music choice ‘This town ain’t big enough’ by Sparks proved an apt choice on the day as Steve’s opponent’s darts were ‘too big’ and the sparks all came from the Londoner; the stage was not big enough for both players and, unfortunately for the Yorkshireman, Steve, it was he who relinquished the power to Paul.

A 180 from Paul in the very first leg of the match was greeted by Russ Bray’s inimitable voice announcing the feat loudly, along with a plethora of ‘MOOOOOS’ from the delighted crowd.

The cameras and bright lights on stage never affected Amos as he went from strength to strength, averaging well into the 90s and would have competed with any of the pros on the day, which included an unforgettable 9 darter from Dean Winstanley.

Steve hit back with a 180 of his own in the third leg of the match, which helped to make the day memorable for him; alas Steve’s ‘Cup final’ was the previous year’s unforgettable triumph in the John Smith’s People’s Darts on the Lakeside stage and it was becoming clear that this year belonged to Amos and a double 12 in the fourth sealed it, to the delight of Paul’s fans.

Amos is just what Redtooth Darts is looking for in a champion: the desire to make it into the Professional game is clearly there for all to see and the guy certainly has bags of character. When asked if he thinks he will make it through Q school, Paul insisted: “I will do my utmost best, if I don’t make it, it will not be through lack of trying, through will to win, I really do want to get through Q school and I believe I’m capable of doing so!”

We wish Paul, Steve and the other fourteen of our Q school entrants the very best of luck in Qualifying School 2013!

Redtooth Darts National Final – Sunday 9th December 2012

Redtooth Darts National Final – Sunday 9th December 2012
Alea Casino, Leeds

Amos refuses to be rattled by Rice as he sets up the Redtooth Darts final revenge date at the Ally Pally!

As the dart players entered the Alea Casino in Leeds at around midday on Sunday there was clearly a buzz of anticipation and expectancy in the air.

The practice boards were peppered with arrows flying in from all four corners of the UK and indeed the world; over sixty of the best amateur dart players vying for one of the sixteen places in Qualifying School for the Professional Darts Corporation, and of course the opportunity to play darts with the greatest ever player, fifteen-time world champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, on that very same evening.

Further, for the top two players on the day, a date on the Alexandra Palace stage beckoned, just two weeks from now.
